The MiCA Crypto Alliance is conducting a short academic study on the experiences of crypto exchanges that have not yet obtained authorisation as crypto-asset service providers under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation.
The study aims to understand the regulatory, organisational and commercial factors that have affected firms during the transition to MiCA. About the study
The introduction of MiCA has created a single authorisation framework for crypto-asset service providers across the European Union. However, public registers show only which legal entities have obtained authorisation. They do not show which prospective CASPs have not, nor why.
A firm may still be preparing an application, have an application pending, have withdrawn from the process, transferred its European activities to another entity, or decided that continued access to the EU market does not justify the cost of authorisation.
This research project is an exploratory mixed-methods study (not a statistically representative survey of the whole crypto sector) seeking to understand those different outcomes, and is intended for crypto exchanges and other businesses that:
- previously provided services to customers in the EU;
- operated under a national VASP or similar registration;
- considered or pursued MiCA authorisation;
- transferred EU customers to another group entity or partner; or
- restricted or discontinued services in the EU.
Responses will be analysed and reported in aggregated or anonymised form.
No response will be attributed to an individual or organisation without express consent.
Contact details for any optional follow-up interview will be collected separately from the survey responses wherever possible.
Participation is voluntary. Respondents may skip any optional question or stop completing the survey at any time before submission.
