Juan Ignacio Ibañez on MiCA and SMEs: Interview with AMLBot

During Davos 2025, our General Secretary, Juan Ignacio Ibañez, spoke with AMLBot about the impact of MiCA on small and medium-sized businesses in Europe.
Juan noted that while MiCA brings much-needed regulatory clarity, the cost of obtaining a licence and meeting compliance obligations can be disproportionately high for smaller firms. This creates a risk that innovative businesses may look to alternative jurisdictions, inside or outside Europe, depending on their needs and resources.
He emphasised that proportionality will be key if Europe wants to maintain a diverse and innovative crypto ecosystem. Rules matter, but access matters too. For MiCA to succeed, it must remain workable for all market participants, not just those with large compliance teams.
