Blockchain for Public Good, Web3 Beyond Finance, and Digital Asset Law: Insights from Recent Industry Discussions

December 11, 2025

Last week, the MiCA Crypto Alliance participated in a series of high-level events across Brussels and Rome, contributing to discussions on blockchain for public good, Web3 innovation beyond finance, and the evolving private-law foundations of digital assets. Across these forums, the Alliance engaged with policymakers, industry leaders, and legal experts to exchange perspectives on how distributed technologies are being applied in practice and how emerging challenges can be addressed through clearer frameworks and shared standards.

BC4EU Summit Side Event: Blockchain for Public Good

At a side event of the Blockchain for Europe Summit in Brussels, the MiCA Crypto Alliance joined a roundtable discussion titled “How can blockchain be used for good?”. Juan Ignacio Ibañez, General Secretary of the Alliance, participated alongside speakers including James Newman (Chiliz), Mariana de la Roche Wills (BlackVogel), Lucy Mills (Chiliz), Joachim Schwerin (European Commission), and Mykolas Majauskas (Bybit).

The discussion focused on how blockchain infrastructure can support public-good use cases through verifiable data, transparent systems, and decentralised governance. Participants examined how these tools can help substantiate environmental and social claims, improve trust in digital interactions, and support fairer and more efficient allocation of resources across both established and emerging markets.

BC4EU Summit Panel: Web3 Innovation Beyond Finance

Also at the BC4EU Summit, Juan Ignacio Ibañez moderated a panel titled “The Impact of Web3 Innovation Beyond Finance”, bringing together perspectives from James Newman (Chiliz), André Vanyi-Robin (Plastiks), and Jordi Mompart (FC Barcelona).

The panel explored practical examples of blockchain applications outside financial markets, ranging from the use of traceable and immutable data to demonstrate real-world plastic recovery, to digital participation mechanisms enabling new forms of engagement between global fan communities and major organisations. Panellists also reflected on the conditions required for meaningful institutional adoption, including reliable data, clearly articulated use cases, and regulatory frameworks that support responsible innovation.

DARTE Rome: Private Law Foundations of Digital Assets

In Rome, the MiCA Crypto Alliance attended the Digital Assets Round Table Expert Series (DARTE), hosted at UNIDROIT with the support of BlackVogel, the European Commission and Bybit. Representing the Alliance, Regulatory Specialist Eya Abid participated in discussions examining the implementation of the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law (DAPL Principles).

The session focused on core private-law issues relevant to digital assets, including ownership, transfer, custody, and secured transactions. These questions are increasingly important as regulatory frameworks such as MiCA intersect with national private-law regimes and raise issues of legal characterisation, enforceability, and insolvency treatment.

In closing remarks, the purpose of the DARTE series was reiterated: to identify challenges faced by the digital asset industry and encourage actors to transform these issues into practical solutions. This approach mirrors how the Liquid Staking Tokens Taxonomy initiative first emerged at DARTE Vienna, after the need for clearer classification of liquid staking tokens under MiCA was raised. The Alliance has since taken this issue forward through its work on developing a structured taxonomy to support greater clarity and consistency.
